The Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, has announced that a three-storey mosque will be opened in the Hiya area later next month.
In a message to the media today, Dr Shaheem said that additional permanent mosques will be opened as part of the second phase of mosque development this year. He noted that the contract for constructing a mosque capable of accommodating 2,500 worshippers has already been awarded, with the project to be funded by a private benefactor. A contractor will be appointed for the construction, he added.
Dr Shaheem also said the ministry aims to replace all temporary mosques with permanent structures by the end of this year.
Alongside these developments, a Quran memorisation project will be launched next month in the island provinces. The programme will focus on areas where Islamic centres have been established or are in the process of being set up, as well as locations with large populations.
