The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade has held discussions with a senior delegation from TikTok on creating new income-generating opportunities for Maldivians through the platform.

According to the ministry, the meeting focused on ways to expand digital monetisation avenues, particularly to support young people and emerging creatives in the country. Officials stated that the engagement aligns with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to building a fully productive economy—an importanDt pledge in his presidential manifesto.

The ministry noted that TikTok could offer new revenue streams for users in the Maldives, adding to the government’s broader digital economy goals. In addition to TikTok, other social media platforms have also been considered in similar discussions aimed at expanding online business and income potential.

Among the topics raised was the introduction of a PayPal deposit and withdrawal service in the Maldives, a move the ministry said would ease current barriers to payment systems that affect those engaged in e-commerce and online manufacturing. Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has previously pointed out that many digital entrepreneurs face challenges due to limited access to reliable payment solutions.

He also highlighted the significant number of manufacturers in the Maldives and reiterated that social media platforms offer a viable channel for income. However, he stressed that without streamlined payment methods, such opportunities remain largely inaccessible.

The ministry further stated that discussions have begun with regional offices to identify the most beneficial approach for TikTok in the Maldivian context. Minister Saeed had earlier noted that the Chinese government has offered assistance in advancing these efforts.
