Tiny Hearts of Maldives has launched a community-based initiative aimed at improving early detection and management of hypertension, marking World Hypertension Day with the rollout of “The Blood Pressure Project.”

The programme, introduced in collaboration with Hinnavaru Health Centre and Hinnavaru Council, enables residents to borrow blood pressure (BP) monitoring devices for home use. Participants are encouraged to record their readings and return the devices along with BP logs for review by healthcare professionals.

According to data cited by Tiny Hearts, a 2022 STEPS survey found that cardiovascular diseases account for 38 percent of deaths in the Maldives. The organisation also noted that roughly one-third of the population has high blood pressure, while an estimated 80 to 90 percent of youth lead sedentary lifestyles.

Under the initiative, the health centre will provide guidance, follow-up care, and treatment support where necessary. Organisers say the project is designed to empower individuals to monitor their health independently while strengthening community-level prevention of hypertension.

Tiny Hearts stated that the project reflects a collaborative approach involving island councils, healthcare providers, and community stakeholders. Councils are encouraged to invest in BP machines and donate them to local health facilities to expand access to preventive care.

As part of the rollout, Tiny Hearts has developed information kits, including BP tracking logs and guidelines for home monitoring. Training and awareness programmes will also be provided to ensure effective implementation across the community.
