The first extraordinary session of the parliament, which commenced this morning, came to an unexpected end after just three minutes.

The session was scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m, with the main agenda focusing on the formation of standing committees. Chaired by Mr. Hassan Afeef, the meeting aimed to address this crucial matter.

During the brief session, it was revealed that the number of non-partisan members had increased compared to previous sessions, prompting a call for amendments to the reports. Mr. Afeef emphasized that the session could only proceed if the revised reports were made available to the members, along with the proposed amendments.

While some members expressed their intention to raise points of order, Mr. Afeef abruptly concluded the session less than three minutes after it had commenced.

Currently, the parliament consists of 54 members from the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), with the remaining seats allocated as follows: 5 members from the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), 3 members from the Maldives National Party (MNP), 2 members from the Jumhooree Party (JP), 2 members from the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), and 18 members who are not affiliated with any particular party.
