Male’ City Mayor Adam Azim has announced that the relocation of stray cats from Male’ to a new facility under development in the Farukolhufushi area of Hulhumale’ will commence in November.

Speaking to local media, Mayor Azim confirmed that the construction of the facility has been completed. However, the Male’ City Council plans to gather the cats and monitor them before initiating the transfer process.

The cat facility project is being developed as part of an agreement between the Male’ City Council and the Ministry of Animal Welfare. Construction on the facility began on March 19.

Spanning a 5,000-square-foot plot in Farukolhufushi, the project is intended to address the growing stray cat population in the greater Male’ area, which Azim estimates to be around 3,000.

The increasing number of stray cats has led to public health concerns, particularly due to the presence of excrement in public spaces, such as near the King Salman Mosque in Henveiru, where large numbers of cats have gathered. The facility is expected to provide a solution to these issues once fully operational.
