In the wake of a new government assuming office, Transparency Maldives (TM) issued a statement urging President Muizzu, Vice-President Hussain, and Cabinet ministers to uphold their anti-corruption commitments by publicly disclosing their asset declarations.
The organisation acknowledges President Muizzu’s dedication to combating corruption, as emphasised in his inaugural address.
As we welcome a new government into office, we urge President @MMuizzu, Vice-President @HucenSembe and Cabinet ministers to uphold their anti-corruption commitments & publish their asset declarations.#Haamakurey @presidencymv— Transparency MV (@TransparencyMV) November 19, 2023
Highlighting the importance of asset declaration, TM underscores its role as a robust tool in preventing corruption, identifying conflicts of interest, and exposing illicit enrichment.
Despite the commitment to transparency, the Asset Declaration Bill, initially presented to the people’s majlis by TM in February 2022, remains in the committee stage as of the current date.
TM reiterates its appeal to the people’s majlis, urging them to expedite the passage of the Asset Declaration Bill in accordance with international best practices. The organisation emphasises the significance of this legislation in promoting transparency and accountability within the government.
