Two Arrested Over Violent Clash During PNC Internal Election Vote Count in Hulhumalé

Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the violent altercation that broke out during the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) internal election vote count in Hulhumalé.

The two men, aged 23 and 24, were arrested under a court order on Sunday evening, 12 July, in connection with the incident at Kaamil Didi School (KPS) in Phase Two of Hulhumalé, police said.

According to police, the clash began when a group of people entered the school, damaged property and became involved in a fight with those inside the premises.

Videos shared on social media showed two groups attacking each other with chairs. Two police officers who were at the scene attempted to intervene and stop the violence, but the confrontation continued for several hours.

Police initially made no arrests following the incident. However, after further investigation, two suspects were taken into custody. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
