Two Oil Tankers Catch Fire in Thaa Vilufushi, Two Injured

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has confirmed that two oil tankers caught fire in Thaa Vilufushi today, leaving two individuals with burn injuries.

According to the MNDF, the blaze was reported at 9:41pm, and firefighting teams from the MNDF Central Area Command were deployed to bring the situation under control.
A photograph released by the MNDF shows one of the vessels completely burnt. A member of the Vilufushi Council stated that the fire involved two oil tankers, both of which were carrying oil at the time of the incident.
The council official further reported that the owner of the boats and a foreign worker employed by him sustained burn injuries. Both are currently receiving treatment at the Vilufushi Health Centre, with the owner reported to have suffered severe burns. Details regarding the extent of the injuries are yet to be confirmed as treatment continues.
According to the council, residents helped evacuate the two vessels from the port to prevent further damage. Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
