Two Velidhoo Men Sentenced for Drug Trafficking

Two men from Velidhoo have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms for trafficking dimorphine, with one also convicted of trafficking cannabis.

According to the Criminal Court ruling, 44-year-old Ahmed Ibrahim of Dilbahaaruge, Velidhoo, was found guilty of trafficking both dimorphine and cannabis under the Narcotics Act. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison and fined MVR 100,000 for trafficking dimorphine, and received an additional three-year sentence for trafficking cannabis under Article 115(c) of the Act.

His total sentence, calculated under Article 186 of the Criminal Procedure Code, amounts to 27 years, 11 months and five days.

Ahmed Ibrahim was arrested on 7 May 2024 on suspicion of possession and trafficking. His case was forwarded to the Prosecutor General’s Office on 30 June 2024.

The second defendant, 39-year-old Hussain Ibrahim of Happy Garden, Velidhoo, was convicted of trafficking dimorphine. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison and fined MVR 100,000.

Police said his final sentence, calculated under Article 186, amounts to 24 years, 11 months and 14 days.

Hussain Ibrahim was arrested on 11 April 2022, and his case was sent to the Prosecutor General’s Office on 10 May 2022.
