Man Convicted of Raping Two-Year-Old Granddaughter Dies
A man imprisoned for the rape of his two-year-old granddaughter has died in a Maldivian prison. The victim’s maternal family reported the rape to authorities in January 2020.
In 2022, the Criminal Court convicted Hassan Moosa Didi and Ibrahim Didi, the victim’s paternal great-grandfather and grandfather, respectively, and sentenced them both to life imprisonment. Hassan Moosa Didi died in prison on 9 September 2023.
The Maldives Correctional Service announced that Ibrahim Didi died in the early hours of Friday. The Service reported that Ibrahim Didi collapsed last night and, despite first aid, was unresponsive. He was taken to Hulhumale’ Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 2:40 am after treatment proved unsuccessful.
The Correctional Service confirmed that Ibrahim Didi had been receiving treatment for high blood pressure, cholesterol, and tremors. The rape case shocked the island of Kudahuvadhoo and the wider Maldives. The prosecution stated that Hassan Moosa Didi and Ibrahim Didi had subjected the victim to repeated sexual assault over a prolonged period.
