Velana International Airport (VIA) has announced the successful upgrade of its Aeronautical Message Handling System (AMHS), highlighting a significant leap forward in technological advancement for air navigation services.

The AMHS, designed as a next-generation technology platform, facilitates the seamless exchange of aeronautical information among stakeholders involved in flight operations, air navigation services, and airport operations. Key information communicated through this system includes details related to flight plans, NOTAM (Notice to Airmen), and meteorological updates.

The upgraded system automates formerly manual processes, simplifying activities like flight plan approvals and filing procedures through a secure internet network. Developed in-house at VIA, the integration involved an investment of around USD 500,000. IDS AirNav, a globally recognised leader in AMHS services, supplies the system. IDS AirNav has contributed significantly by providing essential consultancy and training for MACL staff.

The implementation of AMHS highlights MACL’s ongoing dedication to advancing air navigation services, improving operational efficiency, and ensuring the safety of air navigation services. This service will be administered by Maldives National Air Traffic Services (MNATS), the principal air service provider in the Maldives and a subsidiary company of MACL.
