Voting Underway for PNC Constituency Elections Nationwide
Voting has begun for the People’s National Congress (PNC) constituency elections across the Maldives, with members casting ballots in 131 inhabited islands to elect party officials.
The polls opened this morning, with around 2,500 candidates contesting various constituency-level positions. Voting will continue until 4:00 pm, with the party stating that voters already in the queue by the closing time will be allowed to cast their ballots.
Under the PNC’s regulations, MPs elected on the party’s ticket automatically serve as presidents of their respective constituencies. As a result, constituency president elections are only being held in constituencies without a sitting PNC MP. However, members in the Dhiggaru constituency are also voting to elect a president after Ahmed Nazim was removed from the position over his conduct.
The party’s higher council, or Congress, is scheduled to take place from September 15 to 18 following the completion of the constituency elections.
