Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef departed for Berlin, Germany, yesterday evening to participate in the Berlin Climate Mobility Forum 2026, where he is scheduled to speak as a keynote participant.

The forum, which will take place from 18 to 19 June, will bring together heads of state, senior government officials, representatives of climate-vulnerable communities, and youth innovators to discuss the challenges posed by climate-induced mobility and adaptation strategies in response to climate change.

According to the President’s Office, the forum aims to advance international dialogue on the growing impacts of climate change on human mobility and identify practical solutions to support affected communities.

A key outcome of this year’s gathering will be the formal adoption of the Global Climate Mobility Principles, a high-level agreement focused on supporting adaptation pathways that protect people’s right to remain in their communities while ensuring that any necessary relocation takes place with dignity.

The forum will also serve as a platform to develop a roadmap for translating these commitments into partnerships and coordinated action among governments and stakeholders.

During the visit, Vice President Latheef is scheduled to deliver an opening statement during the High-Level Segment on the Climate Mobility Principles. He will also participate in a high-level panel discussion focusing on the protection of rights in the face of sea-level rise.

The Maldives has consistently highlighted the challenges posed by climate change and sea-level rise in international forums, advocating for stronger global action to support vulnerable small island nations.
