Former President Yameen Abdul Gayoom, who also served as the President of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), has taken the decision to part ways with the party and establish a new political entity.

In a televised statement on Channel 13 Thursday night, Yameen’s legal representative, Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed, characterised the move as a challenging decision for the former President.

According to Jameel, the estrangement between Yameen and the PPM leadership had been growing, with alleged neglect and lack of communication from the party’s current leadership.

“Since his election as President, Dr. [Mohamed] Muizzu has not responded to any phone calls from President Yameen. The PPM Leadership has distanced itself from President Yameen, no longer engaging in discussions or seeking his advice. In their perspective, they no longer wish for President Yameen to remain within the party or contribute his guidance,” stated Jameel.

Accusing Dr. Muizzu and the PPM leadership of betrayal, Jameel suggested that the party’s stance has changed significantly, prompting Yameen’s departure. With parliamentary elections on the horizon, Jameel claimed that many Maldivians are inclined towards aligning with a party that shares Yameen’s ideology.

Pointing to what he perceived as a hidden agenda, Jameel alleged that Muizzu and the PPM leadership had supported Yameen with ulterior motives, promptly sidelining him once their goals were achieved.

Highlighting Yameen’s contributions, Jameel contended that Yameen played a significant role in addressing injustices from the previous government. He also accused the current government of exploiting Yameen’s ideology to secure power.

While not specifying individuals, Jameel asserted that certain individuals had “hijacked” the PPM.

The announcement comes at a crucial juncture as Yameen seeks to forge a new political path in anticipation of upcoming political developments in the Maldives.
