PS5/PS4 CMOS – and why you shouldn’t be scared of it

We’ll start this news roundup with the biggest story from last week - the elusive CMOS battery in our consoles.

Before we go any further, rest assured that your console is not a ticking time bomb. Your console will not suddenly die and it will not brick itself unexpectedly. Any articles or people claiming so are doing it purely for clickbait.

The CMOS battery is present in all modern consoles as a way to track time internally when the console powers off. And this battery will die eventually - in around 10-20 years. That’s right, this issue would be a problem only if you’re going to be using the same console you’re using right now in two decades.

Even if you’re determined to use the same console you currently own so far into the future, there are multiple ways around this issue.

  • Replace the CMOS battery in your console manually in a few years before it becomes an issue, so it’ll last even longer
  • Get a brand new console in ten years which comes with a new CMOS battery, since your current console will most likely be experiencing hardware issues not related to CMOS
  • Worst case is that Sony removes the PS4 or PS5 online store so that even if you replace the CMOS your console won’t work - in which case you can always jailbreak the console to play your games since it won’t work otherwise because the network is permanently off - CMOS or not

The same sources that first reported on the CMOS issue has also stated that Sony is now working on a fix for it. This minor problem that most gamers would never experience is likely to become even more irrelevant.

For further context, all desktop PCs and laptops have a CMOS battery on their motherboard as well. If you’ve never had your PC or laptop suddenly brick itself out of nowhere, then you should know how minor this internet-fueled catastrophe actually is.

Intel Bleep software to help filter out toxicity in voice chat

Intel is making a big splash in the voice chat market with its Bleep software, set to release later in 2021. Its main purpose is to automatically filter out certain words considered as harassment or toxic when you’re in a party chat with others.

If they can get this to work for people who’re livestreaming, it might help a lot of streamers with smaller guffaws like an accidental swear.

Sony is looking for a new Head of Mobile Division

Sony has opened a new job listing looking for a Head of a new Mobile Division under its gaming umbrella. Online speculation is that Sony is looking to bring its most popular franchises to mobile.

Sony has already seen a lot of success with mobile gacha games, so it’s easy to see why the company would be looking to bring it’s bigger and more famous console titles to mobile.

Sony’s Play at Home initiative gets a big update with Horizon Zero Dawn

Sony continues its support for its Play at Home initiative by introducing a couple of new games to it. Starting now, any PlayStation gamer can get Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition for free. This is in addition to a whole bunch of other games that are already part of the initiative that you can still claim.

Play at Home was started by Sony to help people who may be stuck at home for an extended period of time by giving away some great games for free.

Epic Games also giving out free stuff to PC gamers

Anyone with an Epic Games account can claim Alien: Isolation for free on PC. The Epic PC client is free for all users, so there really isn’t any reason not to load the game to your account, even if you can’t play it right now.

Alien: Isolation is considered one of the best horror games released in recent years.

New Resident Evil Netflix series coming soon

Resident Evil has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years, with multiple games being released to a lot of fanfare. This year too, has a lot in stock for Resident Evil fans with both a new game and a new Netflix series coming out soon.

Titled “Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness”, this Netflix CGI animated series takes place soon after the events of Resident Evil 4, with Leon and Claire both at the White House when something unexpected happens.

Zombies.

Zombies happens in the White House.

We have no doubt this will be an enjoyable watch. And fans don’t have to wait long, as the series is set to release sometime in July this year.
