A Further Look at Upcoming Games This Year

Returnal
The next-gen consoles don’t have many next-gen only titles they can use to showcase exactly what these powerful consoles can do. Returnal hopes to do just this on April 30th when it releases as a PS5 exclusive.
Returnal is a wonderful mix of some very different game genres:
- It’s a roguelike - which means you’ll be dying a lot, and playing randomized levels over and over as you get stronger and can survive longer.
- It’s a third person shooter with some very fast paced combat and unlockable abilities
- It has RPG-like upgrading for your character and weapons
- It’s a bullet hell arcade shooter
Not only does the gameplay look uniquely interesting, but the game looks amazing too. A must have for all PS5 owners.
God of War Ragnarök
The announcement of the God of War sequel in last year's State of Play was a welcome surprise. God of War Ragnarök is set to release some time in 2021.
Sony Santa Monica Studio has become an integral part of the PlayStation brand. Along with Naughty Dog, these talented developers have consistently delivered hit after hit for PlayStation gamers. God of War is easily one of the most recognizable franchises in modern gaming and its latest entry is one of the most lauded titles in gaming history. A beloved game by both players and critics, God of War 2018 won an incredible number of Game of the Year awards - a tough act to follow.
But if anyone is up for it, it’s the amazing folks at Santa Monica Studio. We can’t wait to see where Ragnarök takes Kratos next.
Call of Duty: WW II Vanguard
In a surprise move that surprised gamers all over the world, Activision recently announced that they would be releasing a new Call of Duty game this year.
Tentatively titled Call of Duty: WW II Vanguard, the game will be set in World War II. What actually is surprising is that Activision is planning for both 2021 and 2022 Call of Duty games to be cross generation - meaning that Call of Duty games for the next few years won’t be able to take full advantage of the much better hardware found in the PS5 and Series X.
This is in stark contrast to its main competitor, Battlefield - which we will be looking at next.
Battlefield 6
The next installment in the popular Battlefield series is set to release in late 2021.
It’s been three years since Battlefield V, and developers Dice have been working with the community to release a game that builds on and fixes the mistakes made in the 2018 Battlefield title. Although little is known about this sequel, multiple sources online point to it being a next-gen only title. This opens the floodgates to it being a much bigger and better game than could be possible on the last generation PS4 or Xbox One consoles.
Battlefield 6 is set to feature 128 player matches and have advanced level and map destruction through player actions. This one looks like it might be a fan favourite.
Horizon Forbidden West
The sequel to the celebrated Horizon Zero Dawn will release for PS4 and PS5 sometime in 2021.
The original Horizon game back in 2017 was one of the most successful original IPs ever launched on PlayStation. The game managed to quickly capture the hearts and minds of gamers everywhere with its rich, beautiful world and the deeply engaging story. And the robot dinosaurs. Especially the robot dinosaurs.
The story of Aloy and her world of ruins and giant mechs will continue in Horizon Forbidden West as she goes on another journey to stop a mysterious plague that’s killing everything. We can expect this deceptively simple synopsis to expand on the rich backstory of the Horizon world and its fantastical machines.
Back 4 Blood
Back 4 Blood is scheduled to release on June 18th 2021.
This spiritual successor to the popular Left 4 Dead series has been getting a lot of attention from co-op shooter enthusiasts. Made by the same people who created the Left 4 Dead games, Back 4 Blood builds on the 4 player co-op survival shooter gameplay that its predecessor popularized, with some new features like a perk-based card system.
The previews so far look very positive, and this title will likely prove to be a hit among those who like to play with their friends.
Far Cry 6
Another sequel from a game franchise that will be familiar to all, Far Cry 6 is set to release in the second half of 2021.
This time, players are tasked with taking down a tyrannical dictator - very different from taking down a tyrannical cult leader or a tyrannical king in previous games - portrayed by talented actor Giancarlo Esposito. The game will retain the freedom of exploration and open-ended combat that the series is famous for, while attempting to tell a harrowing story of a rebellion and the opposing tyrant and his son.
Cyberpunk 2077
Cyberpunk 2077 might finish its beta run and get a full release sometime in 2021.
The black sheep of CD Projekt Red’s video game releases, Cyberpunk has had countless issues since launch – ranging from game breaking bugs to the game AI not working properly to unfinished quests and storylines.
Maybe we’ll finally see the finished version of the game this year.
