Game Development isn’t Just for Big Companies
Written by: Maldivian Gaming League
Minecraft is undoubtedly one of the biggest games in the world. With over 200 million copies sold, even people who don’t play video games have probably heard or seen somebody they know play it.
Yet the most interesting thing about Minecraft isn’t the fact that people have been playing it continuously for more than 12 years. It’s not even the fact that Minecraft videos are still among the most popular content among sites like YouTube and Twitch. The most surprising fact about this game is that it was all created by one person - Markus “Notch” Persson.
Markus Persson made the base version of Minecraft in about a week of programming and spent the next few years improving on the various systems in the game. Even though he was an unknown developer at the time with a brand new game, even this early version of Minecraft proved immensely popular with the gaming community and people rushed in to play. Markus was soon making enough money from sales of the alpha version of his game to quit his job and work on it full time.
The popularity of Minecraft only increased over the years until it would eventually end up on all major gaming platforms. Whether you owned a gaming console, a mobile phone, a PC or even a tablet - Minecraft was there for you to dive into.
The undying love gamers had for Minecraft over the years caused major publishers to pay special attention to it. In 2014, Minecraft was sold to Microsoft for $2.5 billion. Markus himself made $1.5 billion from the sale, making him one of the richest individuals on the planet.
To this day, Minecraft is still one of the most played games in the world. From children to adults, it’s a game that anyone can pick up to play and have a good time with. Markus Persson single handedly changed the gaming world with just an idea.
Anyone can, if their goal is clear enough.
