Mariyam Layaal (Lailiie) has carved a niche for herself in the world of art with her stunning ballpoint artwork, especially with her piece titled, 'Hukuru Miskiy', displayed at the Maldivian contemporary exhibition, "Unveiling Visions 2023."

Speaking about her displayed artwork, Layaal revealed that the intricate piece took her 100 hours to make.

When asked about her artistic journey, Layaal explained, "I have tried various mediums, including acrylics and pencils, but none resonated with me as much as ballpoint pens did."

Layaal further added that the unique texture and vintage feel that the pen strokes impart to the canvas have become an integral part of her artistic identity.

Her artwork 'Hukuru Miskiy' displayed at the exhibition is a testament to the country's rich heritage. Layaal's artwork masterfully captures the intricate details of this structure, creating a visual narrative that bridges the gap between the past and the present.

"Preserving these architectural treasures is crucial for future generations to appreciate and learn from," Layaal emphasised, underlining the importance of her work as a conduit of cultural preservation.

"I have always been drawn to historical places and stories," she shared. "Through my art, I aim to breathe life into these stories, allowing them to resonate with modern audiences."

Speaking about the future of artists in the Maldives, Layaal expressed optimism.

"The landscape for artists in the Maldives is evolving rapidly. There is a surge of art events, exhibitions, and festivals that provide platforms for artists to showcase their work."

Layaal further asserted that artists have ample opportunities to connect with audiences whether working independently or collaborating with companies. She also expressed the importance of artists taking the initiative to reach out to potential partners and clients.

Layaal's journey from wielding a ballpoint pen as a tool of expression to presenting her intricate creations at exhibitions is a testament to her dedication and creativity.
