PNC MP for Bilehdhoo constituency Ahmed Aslam has defended the Maldives’ sovereignty in response to claims by opposition members and political figures that the Ras Malé project could pave the way for an Israeli community to be established in the country. Addressing Parliament, Aslam said the Maldives had produced heroes who stood up for the nation and its religion, drawing parallels with Saladin Al-Ayyubi, George Washington and Mahatma Gandhi. He said the Maldives’ situation differed from that of Palestine, noting that it was an independent, sovereign state with its own constitution, language and religion.
