Kudahuvadhoo MP Hussain Hameed has questioned why smokers continue to receive Aasandha healthcare benefits, pointing to the heavy financial burden non-communicable diseases (NCDs) place on the state.

Speaking during a parliamentary debate on a bill proposing a generational smoking ban, Hameed highlighted that tobacco use is a major contributor to NCDs—conditions on which Aasandha reportedly spends the most.

“We’re essentially paying twice—first for tobacco and then for treatment,” he said, calling for more responsible use of taxpayer funds. Hameed also pushed for a street smoking ban to protect the public. His remarks follow similar concerns raised by PNC MPs amid discussions to increase tobacco taxes and prohibit vaping.
