President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced the launch of an eyewear service at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), part of a wider effort to reform the Maldivian health sector. The initiative includes raising the Aasandha allowance for eyewear from MVR 1,000 to MVR 2,000, with the aim of improving quality and reducing dependence on private providers.

“If you make this price from 1,000 to 2,000, they won’t have the opportunity to give that low quality eyewear frame. We will start this work at IGMH. We will start the eyewear business at IGMH,” the President stated in an interview with Public Service Media (PSM).

The initiative is based on public feedback and government assessments, and the service is set to expand to other state-run hospitals.

President Muizzu also highlighted over MVR 400 million worth of ongoing healthcare projects, ranging from hospital upgrades to workforce development, with a particular focus on the Malé region to reduce the need for overseas treatment.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to a fully digital health sector and underscored the importance of preventive care and long-term planning as key components of his administration’s health policy.
