Power Outage Hits Greater Malé Amid Recent Tariff Reforms

MV+ News Desk | June 1, 2025

A widespread power outage affected Malé City, airport, and Hulhumalé today, with the State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) confirming the disruption was caused by a technical issue.

The outage comes just two days after President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced a reduction in domestic electricity tariffs, set to take effect from 1 June. The revised pricing lowers the rate from MVR 4.25 to MVR 3.80 per unit, aiming to ease the burden on households—particularly those consuming over 500 units monthly.

President Muizzu addressed the outage, stating:
“I have asked the authorities to take the power outage as a serious issue. The government should do everything necessary to arrange the electricity service so that such a thing does not happen again.”

Meanwhile, the Maldives Police Service has launched a special investigation into the incident, noting the significance of the outage across the Greater Malé region.
