MV+ News Desk | February 15, 2025

The Rashu Expo, an event aimed at promoting local tourism and island culture, commenced last Thursday at Hulhumale’s Central Park.

Organised by The Travel Guys, a marketing and PR firm focused on promoting the Maldives, the expo will run from 13 to 15 February. The event highlights the importance of local tourism in the Maldives. The Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, officially opened the event.

During the opening ceremony, Minister Saeed emphasised that the Rashu Expo is a high-priority initiative for President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. He noted that the government is committed to supporting small and medium-sized businesses. The Minister further explained that his presence at the event was due to the President’s personal request, underscoring the President’s strong support for this initiative. This, he said, demonstrates the government’s recognition of the efforts of local businesses.

Minister Saeed also discussed the importance of marketing island-specific attractions to tourists as a means to promote local tourism. He stated that such initiatives are crucial for the economic development of the islands and would assist in the promotion and marketing of their unique offerings.

He cited examples such as islands with large wetlands, environmental attractions, and rich cultural heritage, which remain underexplored by tourists. He explained that presenting tourists with authentic stories from each island could serve as a compelling marketing tool. Additionally, the government aims to improve connectivity to these islands, ensuring accessibility for tourists.

The Minister also highlighted the role of the Maldives’ foreign embassies in promoting island businesses and tourism. He suggested that collaboration with embassies could further strengthen efforts to raise awareness about local islands and businesses abroad.

In his remarks, Minister Saeed touched upon the advantages of the China-Maldives Free Trade Agreement, noting that the agreement has led to the reduction of duties on construction materials, furniture, fittings, and lighting for new guesthouse businesses. Previously taxed at between 5 and 10 percent, these materials now enjoy a duty-free status, benefitting local businesses.

The Rashu Expo features over 50 stalls representing island councils, guesthouses, resorts, and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). More than 25 islands are involved, alongside various companies showcasing local crafts, cultural heritage, and traditional cuisine. Participants have also used the opportunity to share information about the services and business opportunities available at the event.

An expo participant expressed the aim of the event, stating that it seeks to showcase the uniqueness of the islands, highlight traditional cuisine, and contribute to the growth of local tourism.
