The Battle to Preserve the Coral Reefs in the Maldives

MV+ News Desk | October 24, 2022

The Maldives is surrounded by some of the biggest coral reefs. They are home to countless species marine species, but the islands’ coral reefs are in danger.

Many of the coral reefs have been dying in the recent years. While the local organisations are taking measures to save the coral reefs by using different methods of preservation, the coral reefs are in a dire situation.

Coral reefs in the Maldives are subjected to climate and human-related or anthropogenic issues, as well as the issues of global warming and the rise of sea surface temperatures have a negative impact on the environment.

The increase of global temperatures causes other problems, such as ocean acidification, biodiversity loss, and negative mass loss of glaciers.

The main attraction of the islands has been healthy coral reefs and colourful fish. This is what is marketed mainly for tourists and scuba-diving destinations. There is no shortage of coral reefs and dive sites.

The archipelago islands are home to 250 different types of coral species. With a thriving environment of coral species, Maldives faces a dire threat due to the increase of sea surface temperatures.

As the world is gripped by record temperatures, more than 60% of coral reefs in the Maldives has been hit by bleaching. This is caused when the coral is exposed to the extreme changes in temperatures, turning the coral white.

When the corals are exposed to these risky conditions, it is impossible to return back to normal.

Due to our low-lying nation, the coral reefs are exposed and threatened by sea level rises.

The future of the world’s climate and the condition of the Maldives’ coral reefs are hard to predict.
