Gov’t to Launch Helicopter Services in March 2025

Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen has announced that helicopter services in the Maldives are set to commence in March 2025.

The services aim to enhance the National Emergency Service and cater to the tourism sector. The Ministry of Transport revealed that 36 foreign entities expressed interest following the call for Expressions of Interest (EOIs) in August. These submissions were part of the government’s initiative to expand emergency medical services and improve connectivity for tourists.

Speaking on Hafthaa 52, a programme marking one year of the current administration, Minister Ameen assured the public that the services would operate under strict compliance with Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) regulations. He also stated that the government plans to finalise an agreement with a helicopter service provider within the next two weeks.

Reflecting on the past, Ameen acknowledged the concerns stemming from tragic incidents involving helicopters over two decades ago, which led to public apprehension. He noted that the decision to reintroduce helicopters was guided by recommendations from the United Kingdom’s Civil Aviation Authority.

“This change is based on recommendations from the UK CAA. Only helicopters deemed most compatible with the Maldivian environment will be operated here. We have specified the type, size, and safety measures for the helicopters, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards,” Ameen explained.

The introduction of helicopter services is expected to address several logistical challenges, including the transport of patients between islands and to Malé, as well as facilitating tourist travel during night-time.

In addition to the planned helicopter services, the government has recently operationalised a Dash 8 aircraft and a seaplane as air ambulances. Furthermore, Indian-donated Dornier aircraft and helicopters, operated by civilian crews, continue to provide essential services.

The launch of helicopter operations marks a significant milestone in the Maldives’ efforts to modernise its aviation infrastructure and improve access to critical services.
