Maldives Participates in 52nd Universal Periodic Review Session
The Maldives is taking part in the 52nd Session of the Universal Periodic Review, as the United Nations Human Rights Council’s review process examines the human rights records of fourteen countries in Geneva.
The session began at the Palais des Nations and will continue until 15 May 2026. During the two-week session, the UPR Working Group will review Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Palau, Paraguay, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Solomon Islands and Somalia.
The Maldives delegation is led by Dr Salma Rasheed, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations Office in Geneva. The delegation is expected to participate in the proceedings and provide recommendations to the States under review.
The UPR is a State-driven process under which all UN Member States are reviewed on their human rights records. It allows countries to present progress on their human rights obligations and commitments, while other Member States provide recommendations for further improvement.
The UPR Working Group meets three times a year. The current Fourth Cycle began in November 2022 and is scheduled to continue until 2027.
For the Maldives, participation in the session reflects its continued engagement in multilateral human rights processes, particularly through the UN system in Geneva.
