The Parliament has cancelled its scheduled sitting for today, which would have been the second session since reconvening after a prolonged recess for the last 10 days of Ramadan and the Eid al-Fitr holidays.
The legislative assembly had resumed sittings on Monday following an 18-day hiatus, with the last session held on 19 March.
Monday’s agenda included only two items: an emergency motion and a resolution submitted by the main opposition party, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir presented the emergency motion, calling for the expedited passage of a bill introduced in May 2024 to ban the entry of Israeli passport holders. The motion was framed as a protest against what were described as Israel’s genocidal actions in Palestine.
However, the motion was rejected by Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim, who ruled that it did not satisfy the criteria outlined in the Parliament’s Standing Orders for emergency motions.
The second item on the agenda was a resolution put forward by South Hulhumalé MP Dr Ahmed Shamheed. The resolution sought the Parliament’s position on whether an explanation should be requested from the government regarding reports of a decision by the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) to print money. A preliminary debate was held on the matter before the sitting concluded.
No sittings are scheduled for today, and committee activity remains limited. The only committee meeting expected to take place is that of the Public Accounts Committee, which is set to review pending cases.
