Dialysis treatment is now available in Noonu Atoll Velidhoo, enhancing access to essential healthcare services for patients with kidney disease on the island.

The introduction of this service aims to ease the burden on affected individuals and their families, particularly as Velidhoo has a notable number of residents suffering from kidney failure.

The service commenced with treatment being provided to two patients during the inauguration. Velidhoo Health Centre, where the service is based, currently has the capacity to provide dialysis to two patients at a time. According to the Health Centre’s Senior Political Director, Aminath Ruufa, there are seven patients on the island in need of regular dialysis. She noted that the absence of local services had previously forced several families to relocate to the capital, Malé City, or even abroad to access necessary care.

The launch of the service follows the return of one such family to Velidhoo, enabling the commencement of treatment on the island.

Dialysis is already available in Noonu Atoll’s capital, Manadhoo, and Velidhoo becomes the second island in the atoll to offer the service.

The Ministry of Health stated that dialysis services are now accessible in fifteen islands across the country, excluding Malé. The government has committed to expanding the availability of the service to all atolls, with recent progress including the introduction of dialysis in HA. Ihavandhoo last month. Plans are also underway to begin services in Th. Veymandoo later this month.
