Concerns have emerged across the Maldives regarding delays in the payment of remuneration to Imams serving in various atolls.

The Ministry of Islamic Affairs informed the Imams of the delay through a message in a Viber group, attributing the issue to system-related difficulties that have hampered the processing of salaries. However, the ministry did not indicate when the salaries would be credited to their accounts.

The Viber group, used for communication between the ministry and the Imams, has its settings configured to restrict general members from sending messages, leaving the Imams without a direct channel to raise concerns or seek clarifications within the group.

It is noted that salaries are typically credited on the first day of each new calendar month. In cases where the first falls on a public holiday, salaries have usually been processed ahead of time.

It was further observed that Imams serving in the Greater Malé area have already received their salaries, setting a contrast with those working in the atolls.

Efforts to obtain comments from the Ministry of Islamic Affairs and the Ministry of Finance were unsuccessful.
