4,408 Plants Destroyed in First Four Months of 2025 After Inspection of Imports

A total of 4,408 plants brought into the Maldives were destroyed between January and April 2025 following inspections by the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare.
According to statistics published by the Ministry, 405 shipments were inspected during this period, which altogether contained 3,869,648 plants.

Of these, 37 shipments were found to be in violation of import regulations. The majority 35 shipments were subsequently destroyed, while the remaining two shipments were released after the required documentation was submitted. The detained shipments included a total of 4,732 plants, with 4,408 of them ultimately destroyed and 324 released.
Meanwhile, 368 of the inspected shipments, carrying 3,864,916 plants, were cleared and released without issue. The Ministry did not disclose the specific reasons for detention or destruction but reiterated its commitment to ensuring the biosecurity of agricultural imports.
