The Maldives has been officially included in Saudi Arabia’s Makkah Route Initiative, a programme designed to simplify and expedite the Hajj pilgrimage process.
The move is expected to significantly ease travel procedures for Maldivian pilgrims by removing key logistical obstacles currently faced during the journey.
According to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, the inclusion will allow pilgrims from the Maldives to complete most pre-departure formalities before leaving the country. This includes the collection of biometric data, issuance of electronic pilgrimage visas, and the implementation of essential health and safety checks. These measures are intended to ensure a smooth and efficient transition upon arrival in Saudi Arabia.
At Velana International Airport, pilgrims will benefit from streamlined procedures including immediate baggage tagging, registration, and boarding pass issuance at the departure terminal. A dedicated passport team will finalise all required entry arrangements for Saudi Arabia before the pilgrims depart, allowing them to bypass extended wait times upon arrival.
Once in Saudi Arabia, pilgrims will be transferred directly from the designated terminal at Jeddah Airport to their accommodation. Luggage will also be transported directly to their hotels, eliminating the need to collect baggage at the terminal.
The Makkah Route Initiative, established in 2017 by the Saudi Ministry of Interior, currently serves pilgrims from seven countries, including Malaysia, Pakistan and Indonesia. It is part of Saudi Arabia’s broader strategy to enhance the pilgrimage experience and reflects the Kingdom’s commitment to improving the accessibility and efficiency of religious travel.
The Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, expressed gratitude to King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and relevant Saudi agencies for facilitating the Maldives’ participation in the initiative.
The inclusion of the Maldives in the Makkah Route Initiative represents a significant step forward in supporting citizens undertaking the sacred journey and aligns with national efforts to enhance the overall Hajj experience.
