The Ministry of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development has announced the opening of applications for a scholarship programme funded by the Chinese government, offering 39 fully funded postgraduate opportunities for Maldivian public sector employees.

The programme aims to support academic and professional growth, with 14 doctoral and 25 master’s degree scholarships available.

Applications must be submitted through the ministry’s online portal, myedu.egov.mv, by 2 p.m. on 15 May. Detailed submission guidelines are available on the ministry’s website and have been published in the government gazette.

The scholarships, which cover tuition, on-campus accommodation, a monthly stipend, a resettlement allowance, medical insurance, and round-trip airfare, are fully funded by the Chinese government. Successful applicants will have the chance to specialise in a range of academic disciplines.

To be eligible, candidates must be employed in the Maldivian public sector and possess at least three years of relevant work experience. Applicants must also be under the age of 45 by September 2025 and fulfil any additional requirements set by their chosen university.

The ministry has clarified the impact of existing student loans on eligibility. Individuals with active student loans who are up to date with repayments may still apply, as can those who have been selected for a loan scheme but have not yet signed an agreement. However, candidates who receive a scholarship under this programme must forfeit any student loan opportunity. Additionally, those already nominated for another scholarship programme are not eligible to apply.
