Bad Weather Forecast to Persist Until Tuesday, Says MET
The Maldives Meteorological Service has warned that adverse weather conditions are expected to persist across the country through Tuesday, as the Southwest Monsoon intensifies.
According to the weather agency, the active Hulhangu Monsoon is forecast to strengthen over the next three days, from 18 to 20 May. During this period, widespread heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are expected across the Maldives, with rough seas particularly likely in central and northern atolls.

Average wind speeds are also anticipated to accompany the rough seas, increasing the risk to marine travel. The Maldives Meteorological Service has urged the public—particularly seafarers and those planning maritime activities—to remain vigilant and follow updates on the changing weather situation.
The Maldives typically experiences two main monsoon seasons: the Hulhangu Monsoon from May to November, and the Iruvai Monsoon from January to March. The onset of the Hulhangu Monsoon generally begins in the southern parts of the country during early May, gradually spreading northwards by the end of the month.
This year, the Hulhangu Monsoon began affecting southern regions on 7 May.
