A man who was rescued from drowning at the Malé North Harbour on Sunday remains in serious condition, according to Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
The incident occurred shortly before noon on 18 May. The victim, identified only as a Maldivian male, is currently receiving treatment on a ventilator in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. IGMH has not released further details regarding his identity or condition.
The rescue was carried out by Abdulla ‘Fuku’ Areef, a former president of the Maldives Bodyboarding Association and a well-known surfing champion. Areef was at the harbour to collect a package when he noticed the man struggling in the water. He quickly obtained a buoy from a nearby boat and entered the water. By the time he reached the victim, the man was fully submerged. Areef managed to lift him by his clothing and brought him to the shore.
Upon reaching land, Areef called for assistance, and a bystander wearing a Maldives Ports Limited uniform climbed down to help bring the man to safety.
Authorities have not yet issued an official update on the circumstances surrounding the incident.
