The Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Information and Arts has reopened the nomination process for the Maldives Media Council (MMC) by-election, following the withdrawal of two candidates previously contesting for media representative seats.
The by-election is being held to fill three vacancies on the council — two for media representatives and one for a private member. In an announcement published in the government gazette on Tuesday, the ministry confirmed that all three positions are now open for re-nomination.
Originally, four individuals had submitted nominations for the two media representative seats. However, the withdrawal of two candidates has prompted the ministry to restart the nomination process.
The deadline for submitting new applications is 2 p.m. next Tuesday. While existing applicants are not required to reapply, new candidates may submit their forms via email to media@youth.gov.mv.
The decision to reopen nominations comes after several key stages of the by-election process had already taken place. These included the publication of a provisional voter list and the opening of a complaints window prior to finalising the permanent list.
