Previously, identity card printing was handled exclusively by the Department of National Registration (DNR) at its headquarters in the Velana Building in Malé. For residents living outside the capital, the process involved significant delays, as printed ID cards had to be sent to atoll councils before reaching local councils for distribution.
The latest expansion is part of a broader project launched last year to provide national ID card and passport services across all atolls by the end of November 2025. The initiative aims to make essential services more accessible to people across the country.
The addition of services in Baa Atoll marks a major step towards decentralising administrative processes. According to local officials, the move will significantly reduce waiting times for residents in the region, making it easier for them to access services that require a valid identity card.
Providing ID card printing services from the capital or a designated island in each atoll is among President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s electoral pledges. The government continues to roll out similar services in other regions to meet its commitment.
