State Trading Organisation (STO), in collaboration with AstraZeneca and the Cancer Society of Maldives, launched a programme titled Oncology Nurse Excellence (ONE) on 17 April 2025.
The programme is aimed at oncology nurses and is intended to support cancer treatment efforts in the Maldives. According to STO, the initiative will bring together experts in cancer care to conduct workshops and training sessions for oncology nurses across the country.
ONE is structured into four primary sessions and is directed towards nurses working in leading cancer hospitals in the Maldives. Of the sessions held so far, 55 nurses participated in the first, and 59 took part in the second.
The programme focuses on the role of oncology nurses, who often serve as the link between patients and their treatment, providing both medical care and psychological support. It is also intended to help prepare nurses to respond to developments in oncology, with support from various organisations.
A representative from the Cancer Society of Maldives commented on the programme, highlighting the involvement of multiple parties in supporting the nursing workforce. STO stated that the initiative aligns with its wider efforts to raise awareness about cancer and support treatment-related services.
