Azmee and Shafiu Elected to Bar Council Executive Committee Ahead of Term Expiry

The Bar Council of Maldives has elected Mohamed Azmee and Mohamed Shafiu as members of its Executive Committee following a referendum conducted via ‘Fahivote’ yesterday.

The elections were held ahead of the expiration of the current term of the Vice President and four members of the Executive Committee, scheduled to end on 14 July 2025. The process was carried out under announcement No. 480/IUL/2025/10, issued in April 2025, to fill positions on the Executive Committee.

Only two candidates fulfilled the eligibility criteria and were confirmed for the ballot. Out of 1,078 registered lawyers, a total of 228 votes were cast for Mohamed Azmee of which 132 were in favour and 96 against. Mohamed Shafiu received a total of 309 votes, with 270 in favour and 39 against. Voter turnout remained low, with 850 and 769 abstentions recorded for Azmee and Shafiu respectively.

Following the outcome, the Bar Council announced today that it will now proceed to hold elections for the Vice President and two additional Executive Committee positions. Interested and eligible candidates have been invited to submit their applications in the prescribed format by 15:00 on 15 June 2025.
