The handover ceremony, held on Wednesday, was attended by the Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Dr Maryam Mariya, Japanese Ambassador to the Maldives Ishigami Rumiko, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Deputy Resident Representative Pek Chuan Gan, and Mayor of Fuvahmulah City Ismail Rafeea, alongside council staff.
The laboratory and training centre is being developed as part of a collaborative initiative between the Government of Maldives, the Government of Japan, and the UNDP. Once operational, the facility will provide training in agriculture and support the implementation of modern, sustainable farming practices.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, this project represents one of the government’s most significant initiatives aimed at strengthening the agricultural sector. The establishment of the national laboratory is expected to be a key step in promoting the safe use of agricultural products and enhancing food security.
The laboratory will be used to assess the quality of agricultural products and monitor the standards of chemicals applied in cultivation. These measures are intended to improve the safety of locally produced fruits and vegetables and contribute to the production of healthier food. The broader goal of the project is to encourage sustainable agricultural development and reinforce the resilience of the national food system.
