Three state-owned companies have been contracted to develop health facilities across 18 islands in the Maldives.
At a ceremony held at the Ministry of Health, the responsibility for the projects was handed over to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), FENAKA Corporation Limited, and Road Development Corporation (RDC). FENAKA Corporation has been tasked with developing health facilities on nine islands, MTCC on five islands, and RDC on four.
The projects comprise the development of two hospitals and four health centres, as well as the upgrading of 12 existing health centres.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim stated that the primary challenge, particularly in the atolls, is the need for repairs or expansion of health care facilities. He noted that while the president visited several islands, members of the public had raised concerns over limited space in health centres, the age of some facilities, and calls to relocate certain hospitals.
“The president listened to these issues and created policies to respond to these concerns,” Minister Nazim said.
He added that 21 hospitals have been designated to operate under a three-phase approach to address the infrastructure needs of health care facilities in the islands. Additionally, 19 new health centres have been allocated for construction, while 33 existing centres are scheduled for upgrades.
The minister also announced that an announcement would be made shortly to recruit individuals to work on 21 more upcoming projects.
