The main government hospital, Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), has introduced night-time outpatient department (OPD) services in an effort to reduce long queues for doctor consultations.

This move aims to address the persistent issue of overcrowding, particularly for commonly treated illnesses.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced the new night-time OPD service during the latest episode of the ‘Rayyithunna Eku’ podcast, highlighting its potential to significantly ease patient waiting times. He also revealed that arrangements have been improved to facilitate easier access to medicine for inpatients currently receiving treatment at the hospital.

The President emphasised his administration’s commitment to strengthening medical services nationwide, noting that recruitment is underway for over 200 healthcare positions. This expansion is expected to enhance the quality and availability of medical care across the country within the next two years.

In addition, President Muizzu officially opened a new multi-specialty wing at IGMH, which includes 75 beds. The facility features 44 beds in the General Ward, 15 in the High-Dependency Unit, 14 private rooms, and, for the first time, a dedicated Burn Unit with two beds. This development marks a significant step forward in expanding specialised healthcare services at the hospital.
