The Ministry of Social and Family Development is expanding support services for women experiencing domestic violence, with the establishment of three new temporary shelters.

The initiative was announced by Minister Dr Aishath Shiham during an interview with PSM News, as part of the Ministry’s broader efforts to address gender-based violence.

Currently, only one shelter exists in the Maldives for women affected by domestic abuse. The Minister acknowledged the growing need for such facilities, noting the increase in reported cases as a key factor driving the expansion. The new shelters, named Domestic Violence Shelter, are intended to provide temporary accommodation and protection for victims while longer-term solutions are arranged.

Data from April 2025 reveals a concerning number of gender-based and domestic violence incidents. Authorities received 44 reports, comprising 24 cases of physical assault, eight cases of psychological and verbal abuse, and five incidents involving threats and intimidation. In total, 40 instances of violence specifically targeting women were recorded.

Alongside protective measures, the government is also focusing on the economic empowerment of women. This includes the provision of targeted financial assistance through loan schemes, with a designated percentage allocated for women with disabilities. These efforts aim to strengthen the social and economic resilience of women across the country.
