Police Investigate Hit-and-Run Incident at Hulhumalé Crosswalk

The Maldives Police Service has launched an investigation into a hit-and-run incident in which a motorcyclist struck a pedestrian crossing at a designated crosswalk in Hulhumalé.

The incident occurred last Monday at around 14:10 in the afternoon, near the ION shop on Nirolhu Magu in Hulhumalé Phase II. According to police, the pedestrian, a 54-year-old Maldivian man, sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Malé.

Police have arrested a 20-year-old man identified as Mohamed Nashiu of Moonlight Villa, GA. Maamendhoo, in connection with the case. Authorities confirmed that he was the driver of the motorcycle involved in the incident and that he did not possess a valid driver’s licence.

Nashiu was taken into custody under a court order on Thursday and was remanded for six days following his presentation in court on Friday.

The case remains under investigation. Authorities have also highlighted that similar accidents involving vehicles hitting pedestrians at crosswalks have occurred in the past, with some resulting in fatalities.
