Suspected Scammer Zaidhan Ahmed Hashim Arrested Again in New Fraud Case

Zaidhan Ahmed Hashim, a 28-year-old Maldivian with a history of fraud-related offences, has been arrested once more in connection with a new scam reported in April.

He was taken into custody on Tuesday alongside a second suspect, a 30-year-old Bangladeshi national identified as Afrin Akther.

According to the Maldives Police Service, the latest case involves a shop in Hulhumalé that reported fraudulent activity on 16 April. The report stated that goods were repeatedly purchased from the shop using falsified bank payment slips. Subsequent investigations revealed that similar scams had been carried out at two additional shops in Malé.

CCTV footage reportedly shows Zaidhan transporting the fraudulently obtained items into two Hiyaa apartments he had rented. During searches of these properties, police recovered items believed to be connected to the case.

The total value of goods acquired through these scams is estimated at MVR 36,467 from the Hulhumalé shop, MVR 31,150 from one shop in Malé, and MVR 5,817 from another.

Zaidhan has now been remanded in custody for 15 days, while Afrin has been remanded for five days. Police have confirmed that Zaidhan is currently under investigation in connection with 11 separate cases of fraud and deceit. Trials for two of these cases are ongoing.

Prior to this arrest, Zaidhan was taken into custody on 22 May for defrauding local food delivery service, Foodies. In that case, he was accused of placing 30 food orders using fake payment slips, with the total value exceeding MVR 9,000.

Zaidhan has previously been arrested multiple times for similar offences, and police continue to investigate his involvement in a series of fraud cases across the capital.
