The Police have referred the cases of three individuals to prosecution on charges of terrorism.
The suspects are believed to be those arrested during a joint operation conducted by the Police and the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) in March this year. Although it was initially revealed that three people had been detained, no further details about the case were made public at that time.
The Prosecutor General’s Office has confirmed that it has accepted the terrorism charges submitted by the Police against the three individuals. A decision on whether to proceed with prosecution is expected by 7 July.
Officials described the case as very serious but said further details would be shared at a later date.
The Police had previously announced plans to hold a press conference to provide information on both the fire at the Ministry of Housing and the terrorism case. However, this press conference was subsequently cancelled.
