Over 1,400 Students Memorising Quran Across Maldives, Says Islamic Affairs Minister

Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has stated that various institutes across the Maldives are actively engaged in teaching students to memorise the Quran, with attendance figures exceeding 1,400.

Currently, there are 1,434 students enrolled in Quran memorisation programmes at 20 different institutes nationwide. Of these, 783 are female students and 651 are male students.

The National Centre for the Holy Quran hosts the largest number of students in Malé, while the Hulhumalé branch also has a significant attendance. The Ilm Institute for Islamic Studies ranks third, with 127 students enrolled.

Among the inner islands, the Quran institute at R. Kinolhahu leads with 80 students participating.

As of April this year, there are 266 individuals in the Maldives who have successfully memorised the entire Quran, known as Hafiz, according to data from the National Centre for the Holy Quran.

Addu City has the highest concentration of Hafiz, with 65 residing there, followed by Fuvahmulah with 61. Lh. Naifaru ranks third, with 10 Hafiz living on the island, most of whom are school children.
