Raajje Transport Link (RTL) has decided to start charging passengers for ferry services on Zone 2 routes as of 3rd July 2025, ending the free travel previously offered when the route was launched a week earlier.

The move, coordinated with the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, aligns with national transport plans and applies to high-speed ferry routes across several islands within Zone 2. RTL confirmed the introduction of fares through an official statement, noting this marks a transition toward a more sustainable and structured public transport system.

With the introduction of the RTL services, the provider is also offering free-of-charge connections in Raa Atoll from 26 June until 2 July 2025, allowing travellers or residents in the atoll to explore the connectivity provided by the services.

Passengers can now purchase tickets via the RTL website and mobile app, with additional access through island councils or QR code-enabled tickets. A temporary grace period until 2 July 2025 allows users time to adapt to the new system. RTL has provided tutorials on QR code usage through its official YouTube channel and social media pages.

The RTL Travel App, available on both iOS and Android platforms, enables users to plan travel, check ferry schedules, and access special assistance options for passengers with disabilities. Children under three years old will continue to travel free of charge.

RTL, which operates under the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), states that its aim remains to offer reliable, affordable, and sustainable transport services to the Maldivian public.
