The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) will introduce a three-dimensional baggage screening system for the first time at the new passenger terminal of Velana International Airport.

The technology, similar to that used at airports in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, can process 1,200 pieces of luggage per hour through a three-tier screening process that is up to 90 per cent automated.

MACL said the current single-tier screening at the existing terminal causes privacy concerns and delays, with passengers required to scan and sometimes open their luggage before reaching check-in counters. The new system will address these issues by screening baggage after check-in, improving passenger privacy and reducing queues.

The new terminal will include 47 check-in counters, six self-check-in kiosks, and a more spacious layout to improve passenger flow. The three-stage baggage screening process will begin with automated 3D scanning, followed by human oversight from security and customs officers if required, and final inspection using dual-view scanners.

For arriving passengers, the terminal will increase baggage reclaim belts from four to six, supported by high-speed scanning equipment to reduce waiting times.

The new terminal, built to international standards and in compliance with national aviation regulations, will be operated by a dedicated readiness team to ensure all requirements are met. Covering 72,000 square metres and designed to handle 7.5 million passengers annually, the terminal is set to open on 26 July, marking Maldives Independence Day.
