The government has begun accepting applications for permits to import vehicles other than two-wheelers, ahead of new regulations aimed at reducing congestion in the country’s urban areas.

The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation earlier amended the regulations governing vehicle imports, introducing a requirement for an approved garage permit for all four-wheeled vehicles. The amended regulation is scheduled to take effect from 13 July.

In an announcement made on Monday, the Ministry reiterated that the new rule will require all vehicle imports, excluding two-wheelers, to obtain prior approval. The objective is to ease traffic congestion, particularly in the Greater Malé area, where over 100,000 vehicles are currently registered.

Applications for import permits must be submitted through the Ministry’s online portal at eportal.mta.gov.mv. The permit application form is also available on the Ministry’s website and at its reception.

Applicants are required to provide a copy of the permit for the garage, showroom, or warehouse where the imported vehicle will be kept, in addition to other supporting documents.

Authorities have stated that the revised regulation aims to tackle the long-standing issue of overcrowded roads caused by unregulated imports and insufficient oversight of new vehicle registrations. By ensuring designated parking for new vehicles, the government hopes to alleviate traffic congestion and improve mobility in the capital region.
