The Maldives is set to sign an agreement with the Moroccan government to provide Maldivian imams the opportunity to pursue Arabic language studies in Morocco.
The Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, confirmed that the formal agreement required to facilitate the programme has now been received, and arrangements are underway for the signing. The initiative follows a letter sent by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to the King of Morocco, aimed at strengthening educational opportunities for Maldivians, particularly in the field of Islamic studies.
Under the agreement, Maldivian imams will be able to study at a Moroccan institute dedicated to Arabic language education for imams. The institute is directly overseen by the King of Morocco and provides full accommodation and financial support, including pocket money, for enrolled students.
The programme is part of broader efforts by the Maldivian government to enhance the knowledge and experience of local religious leaders through international exposure. Last year, similar training opportunities for imams were made available in several countries.
The training of imams and khatheebs remains a key focus for the current administration. Over 800 imams were trained in the previous year, and the country also hosted its first seminar for imams to address the expansion of their roles, educational opportunities, and the challenges they face.
